The Lakota believe the four winds are sacred, meaning the winds “speak”. The winds from a circle or hoop of life. The colors black, white, red and yellow correspond to the four directions. There is much symbolism associated with these colors and directions.
I have chosen Four Winds as the name of my studio because I believe that art speaks to the souls and spirit of human beings. I want to use my art to advocate for Native Americans, particularly the Lakota. To advocate means to “add your voice.” I want to use my art and books to “add my voice” on behalf of Native Americans. MY hope is to honor them and not to exploit them. I want to showcase the beauty of their culture. But I also want to talk about the problems and issues that plague so many that live on the reservations. The symbolism of the 4 winds also relates to the 4 directions my art has taken me. I am focusing on sculpture, painting/drawing, photography and illustrating.
